Karpagam College of Engineering joins EMC Academic Alliance, to offer a course in information storage technology

Karpagam College of Engineering (KCE) has signed an agreement with EMC (Benelux) B.V. SARL, a subsidiary of EMC Corporation, to join the EMC Academic Alliance Program (EAA) in India

As part of EAA, KCE will receive vendor agnostic curriculum, course content, learning materials, faculty trainings and software simulators developed by EMC, to provide training to their students. EMC will also provide program support in terms of examination papers and sample assignments. Under EAA, EMC has forged alliances with over 75 education institutions across India. And today, more than 3000 students are enrolled in similar information storage courses across India as part of the EAA.

The EMC Academic Alliance is an initiative by EMC to work with the leading educational institutions around the world to address the emerging knowledge gap in storage technologies and developing a resource pool of skilled and certified storage professionals. This is the only program in the industry which offers a vendor neutral, product agnostic storage technology curriculum to the students. Some of the EMC Academies include BITS Pilani, IIIT Bangalore, PSG Tech, R V College of Engineering, TCE-Madurai and Manipal Institute of Technology.

Information is growing at an explosive rate and organizations are struggling to manage this dramatic growth. In the background of this information deluge, Information management and storage has emerged as a promising career for students. EMC is committed to empower the students with best-of-breed skills that will help them face the real world challenges and have a successful career.

On the successful completion of the course, students will receive a certificate from KCE and EMC acknowledging the completion of the course. These students will be better prepared to clear the EMC Associate Storage Technologist Examination, one of the world’s most recognized information storage and management certification.

*According to the IDC whitepaper: “The Expanding Digital Universe: A Forecast of Worldwide Information Growth Through 2010”  information will grow at a CAGR of 57 percent between 2006 and 2010 and APAC excluding Japan will grow 30 to 40 percent faster than the mature economies*

Academic institutions face the challenge of providing students with technical skills and knowledge that is current and needed in the IT industry. The storage segment of the IT industry is growing exponentially, without the supporting qualified pool of applicants to realize full optimization and integrated environments.

Currently, storage education is available from the various storage vendors to their employees and customers, however the education is typically product focused. Very few academic institutions are addressing the need to include storage education in their curriculum. Yet, with storage becoming an increasingly strategic asset in the corporate ranks, many businesses would encourage academia to provide this training. Without the needed education, a skills gap exists, particularly for new entrants into the Information Technology industry. Existing IT professionals are also impacted as they try to stay current with the industry.

As a leader in the storage market, EMC recognizes this challenge and the opportunity to solve this problem. We’ve engaged industry analysts, customers, and partners to research this topic. It became obvious that part of the challenge is the lack of storage education in the academic world. Implementing such education is an ideal solution to fill the gap.

To meet this need, EMC Academic Alliance (EAA) Program was developed to support and enable academic institutions to deliver storage technology education to students enrolled in technology degree programs.

Some of the features about this program are:

  • Fill the knowledge gap prevalent in the industry
  • Exposure to the Fastest growing Sector of IT – Storage
  • This industry is expected to generate 1 million professionals requirement by 2011
  • Trainings are technology centric rather than product
